Lots of months ago I - along with 237 other writers from 15 countries - contributed an essay to the book “Age of Conversation 2″. Since then, I’ve been squirming in my chair like a hyperactive five-year old waiting for it come come out. Well! This week it’s here, and is available for purchase at Lulu.com.

This book is a daring challenge to the business community. Gone are the top-down, command and control messages that held sway through the 20th Century. “Age of Conversation” Timeline

One of my coauthors for the second Age of Conversation published the timeline leading up to our book’s release. Because I can at times be a little A.D.D, I’m doing the same thing to make sure the dates are top of mind.

and so you can get excited about ordering it when the time is ripe:

  • May 15 All chapters due
  • May 16 Editing/reviewing entries begins
  • June 15 Edits/requests for re-works etc. out to authors
  • June 30 All copy finalized
  • July 15 First design/layout due
  • August 1 Layout finalized
  • August 15 Lulu proofs in hand, final edits made
  • August 21 (or so) Book is released

See? It worked. With May 15th right around the corner, I’m now realizing I’d better get after it. Maybe I’ll echo Terrell Meek’s plan of attack.

A Conversational Bum Rush


First bit of news: Today is the Age of Conversation Bum Rush. What does that mean? For one day, a gaggle of bloggers are working to get The Age of Conversation, the most collaborative book in the history of humanity, pushed up to the top of Amazon. It’s a great read, and all proceeds benefit Variety, the Children’s Charity.

Community Management & The Personal Touch

Today my buddy Charlie Trotter told me a story about his experience after signing up for Utterz, a mobile-blogging tool:

I Uttered an Utterz about hoping it would work well with my blog and twitter. I just got an email from the community manager welcoming me and assuring me that it would integrate just fine. He actually listened to my audio thing because I didn’t title it.

He went on to say:

I love it so so much when a site rep contacts me specifically about something. The CEO of Media Temple left me a voice mail thanking me for sending Media Temple a nice email. Dalas Verdugo, Vimeo’s community manager is quickly available through IM and quickly solves my problems when they happen. Now this email from Utterz.

Having that personal connection, having someone take the time to make it when they own a site with so many users is a big deal to me. It makes me a zealot for them.

Boom. How do you turn consumers into zealots? Act like you’re a human and they’re a human and we’re all a bunch of humans.

The Fast Company social network

Fast Company, a business magazine with a heavy lean towards design and innovation (and a personal favorite of mine), has relaunched their website as a social network. Edward Sussman, President of Mansueto Digital, says this about the new FastCompany.com:

Starting today, we become the first major media website to tackle the following problem: Can a business publication blend journalism and online community to create something better than either by itself?

We think so. If done right.

For a publication who’s brand is ideas, I love this. Users who join the network can blog and comment, “befriend” other users, post videos, or even suggest questions to Fast Company. In opting to play equal parts mouth and mouthpiece, the new site is a big, fat, fascinating conversation. I’m looking forward to seeing how the user-generated commentary is used in the the printed magazine.

Ron wrote in the first Age of Conversation, and just because I enjoyed it a lot, here’s a piece from his chapter, “Behavioral Conversations” - -

To succeed in the Age of Conversation, it’s not sufficient for marketers to engage customers in verbal conversations on social networking sites. Instead, they must develop a new marketing competency — a sense-and-respond competency — to sense consumer needs and intentions based on their behavior, and to respond with appropriate advice, guidance and offers. And in a broader sense, this capability is about understanding trends and directions about the customer community based on their collective actions and behaviors.

Conversation is about people, not platforms

If you haven’t yet read Dave Armano’s BusinessWeek article, “It’s the Conversation Economy, Stupid,” kindly stop what you’re doing, take the phone off the hook, give the kids some Benedryl, and do so.Here’s a taste:

One of the engines that is driving “2.0” growth is the fact that communities are forming around popular social platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Flickr, Ning, Twitter—the list goes on and on. These platforms facilitate conversation. Conversation leads to relationships and relationships lead to affinity.

Brand affinity, as companies such as Harley-Davidson (HOG) have proven, often drives communities to form around them. This is why anyone who plays a role in branding needs to become a conversation architect. Marketers, businesses, and designers must have an intimate understanding of how these platforms are evolving and influencing human behavior. There has to be an in-depth understanding of why some us of love to incorporate these services in our digital lives.

I like that Armano emphasizes people over platforms. It’s very easy to get caught up in technological possibilities while not paying due diligence to the conversations you’re working to incite. Each social media platform enables conversation in a very specific way, and none of them work independently.

As a business, before blogging or Twittering or Yelping or any of these other verbs that didn’t exist a few years ago, don’t stop with the knowledge that these create dialogue. Understand how and why as well.
